A. GRADUATE PROGRAM ON MEDIA LITERACY EDUCATION
Offered on five consecutive Saturdays at 9:00 AM- 6:00 PM with a total of forty-two (40) class hours per course.
Objective: To train educators/trainers on
media literacy
General
Course Description:
1. Media Literacy Education in Popular Music
A study of the language of music and its application in interpreting
music composition, historical overview of popular music industry,
functional knowledge of music composition and recording - all as
background for analysis and evaluation of popular music from cultural
and moral perspectives.
2. Culture of Communication- A study of the evolving media culture beyond boundaries of race and nation; media environment today and its impact on individual, family and society.
3.Producing
and Managing Television Programs

A study of the concepts and principles of producing and managing
television programs and its application from a catholic perspective
through skills training in planning, script writing, recording and
broadcasting.
4.
Media Literacy Education in Radio
A study of the language of radio broadcast and its
application in reading radio texts from producer's and listener's
perpectives; historical overview of radio broadcast industry;
functional knowledge of radio production; all as background for
analysis and evaluation of radio programs.

Literacy Education in Newspaper and Magazine
A
study of semiotics and other tools of analysis, its
application in reading print media texts; functional knowledge of
newspaper and magazine publishing; historical overview of the industry;
all as background for analysis and evaluation of newspaper and magazine
contents.
7. Communication Research
A study of the different methods and tools of media
research and its application in doing a research paper.

Media Literacy Education in Advertising
A study of semiotics and other tools of analysis and its
application in reading the different forms of advertising texts;
concepts and principles of advertising practices; ethics in advertising
- all as background for analysis and evaluation from moral and
Christian perspectives.

Media Literacy Education in Television
A study of the language of television and its application in reading TV
media text from cultural perspectives; functional knowledge of TV
production; all as background for analysis and evaluation of TV
programs based on moral and Christian values.

Pastoral Communication Plan and Organizational Development
A
study of the concepts and principles of communication
plan and its apllication, strategic management, human resource
management, leadership, resource mobilization, social marketing and
conflict management - all in the context of Pastoral Ministry.
13.
Producing and Managing Radio Programs
A study of the concepts and principles of producing and
managing radio programs and its apllication from a catholic perspective
through skills training in planning, script writing, recording and
broadcasting.
14.
Producing and Managing Diocesan/Parish/School Newspaper/Bulletin
A study of the concepts and principles of producing and
managing community newspaper/bulletin and its apllication from a
catholic perspective through skills training in planning, news and
feature writing, layout designing and publishing.
15.
Media Spirituality
A study of Theology of Communication and the
use of media technology for sspiritual development.
16. Thesis Writing.

Qualified
Students can earn a Degree on Master of Arts in Education, Specialized
in Media Literacy.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAM ON COMMUNICATION and
MEDIA EDUCATION
Modular
courses offered on weekends (Saturday and Sunday)
for those who are interested in Media Literacy Education but cannot
attend the Graduate Program on a regular five consecutive Saturdays (16
hours each module).
1.
Media Literacy Education for a Mass- mediated Society
A modular course in Media Awareness designed for
teachers, parents and child care-givers. It explores the ways in which
children process the various information communicated by the media in
general.
2.
Advertising and Media Literacy
This is a course on critical awareness, analysis and evaluation of
ADVERTISING (specifically) as a form of communicating media messages.
3.
Film and Media Literacy
This module studies the 'film language' and how it communicates value
messages. It includes viewing of mainstream movies followed by analysis
and evaluation.
4.
Television and Media Literacy
This module studies the 'language' of television and how it
communicates value messages. It is interested in analyzing and
evaluating the top-rated TV programs, with special concern for the most
frequented 'telenovela'.
5. "Media Retreat"
This is a two-day activity that attempts to integrate media experiences
with one's own personal experience with God in daily life. The sessions
are geared towards 'introspection' in an atmosphere of prayerful
silence and through individual and group activities.
6.
Pastoral Communication and Media Literacy Education: An Overview
Understanding the principles and theories of communication on different
levels: intrapersonal, group, organizational, institutional, mass media
and information society, communication culture, media education and
their applications to pastoral ministry. Recommended for pastoral
workers, catechists and youth ministry coordinators and members.
7.
Media Literacy Education and Church Ministry
This module examines the dynamics of communication and media culture in
the light of Christian principles. The course deals with analysis,
evaluation and appreciation of print and non-print images and prepares
the participants to design Action Plans for the promotion of "Media
Awareness". Recommended for catechists and teachers.
8.
Media Culture and Enlightened Values.
This course basically differentiates the values of the media culture
from those of the Gospel. It invites participants to learn to heed the
presence of cultural values and relate to them with the eyes of faith.
9.
Media Literacy Education for Youth Ministry
A two-day training for youth leaders which focuses on the basic media
literacy skills - practical enough for sharing with peer group.
10.
Media Spirituality for Communicator - Apostle
A course that attempts to learn from the ways in which media is able to
communicate effectively to people of all ages.
11.
Children and Television
A course that studies the development tasks of children ages 3-7 and
attempts to help parents and guardians process audio-visual images for
kids.
12.
Media Awareness Seminar - Workshop
A program designed for parents - to help deepen their perception and
understanding of the power and impact of media images and to help them
analyzing and evaluating TV programs for their kids.
