In
1937, three Daughters of St. Paul left Italy for China where they found themselves
unwanted by the bishop of Shanghai, then Hankow. Kind Bishop Yu Pin invited
them to Nanking where they stayed for a short time until the Sino-Japanese
war broke out. Forced to evacuate they went to India where the Pauline priests
have established themselves. Unwanted also there by the hierarchy, they came
to the Philippines in 1938 where at first they did not want to stay because
it was a Catholic country. Mission land for them was China or India.
Not even in Catholic Manila were they welcomed. Another kind churchman, Bishop Verzosa invited them to Lipa, Batangas. There they began their apostolate of visiting the families and disseminating Catholic literature. But the ghost of war kept haunting them. Four years later, the bombing of Pearl Harbor triggered World War II. Together with the Filipino people the Italian missionaries experienced fear, pain and near death. But even then, some young ladies entered the Congregation.
After the war, it was time for starting again. More vocations came. The new archbishop of Manila allowed the Daughters of St. Paul to establish themselves in his archdiocese. Gradually branch houses were opened: Cebu, Davao, Naga, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Legaspi, Baguio, Bacolod, Tacloban, Zamboanga, Pre-Novitiate House, Tuguegarao, and Marikina. Later on, foundations were also opened abroad: Sabah, and Kuala Lumpur in the 60’s, Papua New Guinea in the 80’s and Thailand in the 90’s.
Up to the present, our apostolic activities take the form of publishing and disseminating Catholic literature, running Catholic bookstores, preparing religious radio and TV programs, collaborating in diocesan and national social communication centers.
According to Fr. Alberione’s vision, the Philippines is supposed to be a source of missionaries. At present, there are 31 Daughters of St. Paul working as missionaries in: Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Pakistan, India, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Italy, Great Britain, and Australia.
